L'escrime dans la culture française

FR : Alors que les Jeux olympiques de Paris 2024 approchent à grands pas, la France se prépare à accueillir les athlètes du monde entier pour une célébration de l'excellence sportive. Parmi les nombreux sports qui seront présentés lors de cet événement, l'escrime occupe une place spéciale à Hong Kong et en France. C'est Edgar Cheung Ka Long qui a apporté à la ville la deuxième médaille d'or aux derniers jeux de Tokyo. L'équipe d'escrime de la ville est entrainée par deux coachs français, Grégory Koenig et Pierre Mione. Véritable héritage de la culture française, l'escrime a une longue histo et riche histoire qui s’illustre d'un point littéraire avec les aventures des mousquetaires décrites dans le célèbre roman d'Alexandre Dumas.

L’escrime est riche d’une histoire millénaire. Dès la préhistoire, l’homme se servit de son intelligence pour inventer des armes et améliorer sa dextérité. De l’antiquité en passant par la Chanson de Roland, la célèbre chanson de geste médiévale à d’Artagnan et aux trois mousquetaires, l’escrime a été un moyen d’éducation, un outil militaire et un art d’agrément.

Revenons sur l’histoire de cet art martial européen, toujours présent dans la culture populaire et le cinéma, où même dans les films de science-fiction, les héros se battent au sabre-laser. L’édition 2023 du Hong Kong French Film Festival mettait à l’honneur deux films où l’escrime avait une place centrale : Une affaire d’honneur de Vincent Pérez et, bien sûr, les Trois Mousquetaires, Milady de Martin Bourboulon.

EN Assistant Poe As Paris 2024 Olympics draw near, France prepares to welcome athletes from around the world for a celebration of sporting excellence. Fencing holds a special place in Hong Kong and France, with Edgar Cheung Ka Long bringing home the city's second gold medal in the recent Tokyo Games. The city's fencing team is coached by two French coaches, Grégory Koenig and Pierre Mione. Fencing, a true legacy of French culture, has a long and rich history, exemplified in literary works like Alexandre Dumas' famous novel featuring the adventures of the Musketeers. Fencing has a millennia-old history, evolving from prehistoric times as humans used their intelligence to invent weapons and improve their dexterity. From ancient times through the Chanson de Roland, the famous medieval epic, to d'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers, fencing has served as a means of education, a military tool, and a recreational art. Let's delve into the history of this European martial art, which continues to be present in popular culture and cinema, even featuring in science fiction films where heroes battle with lightsabers. The 2023 edition of the Hong Kong French Film Festival showcased two films where fencing played a central role: "Une affaire d'honneur" by Vincent Pérez and, of course, "The Three Musketeers: Milady" by Martin Bourboulon.

FR : Au Moyen-Age, le chevalier exerçait son art dans des tournois progressivement codifiés et encadrés par des arbitres. De nombreux traités furent consacrés à l’escrime : comme par exemple le Livre des Tournois de René Ier le Bon. La Renaissance des XVe et XVIe siècles est l’âge d’or du duel. Des écoles renommées italiennes furent fondées à Rome, Naples, Vérone ou Venise. Au XVIe siècle, l’arme nommée la rapière, née en Espagne, remplace l’épée à deux mains. Cette nouvelle arme de duel, longue et fine, est idéale pour les coups d’estoc. La force brute cède le pas à la ruse, à l’astuce et à une dextérité plus assurée.

Les rois de France qui régnèrent pendant le XVIe siècle encouragèrent l’escrime. L’Académie des Maîtres en faits d’armes de l’Académie du Roi, ancêtre de l’actuelle académie d’armes, vit le jour à cette époque. Les maîtres d’armes italiens durent céder la place à leurs collègues français.

EN : During the Middle Ages, knights practiced their art in gradually standardized tournaments supervised by referees. Numerous treatises were dedicated to fencing, such as René Ier le Bon's Book of Tournaments. The Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries marked the golden age of dueling. Renowned Italian schools were founded in Rome, Naples, Verona, and Venice. In the 16th century, the rapier, a slender and long weapon born in Spain, replaced the two-handed sword. This new dueling weapon, ideal for thrusting attacks, emphasized cunning, cleverness, and greater dexterity over brute force. The kings of France who reigned during the 16th century encouraged fencing. The Academy of Masters in the Art of Arms, the predecessor of the current academy of arms, was established during this period. Italian fencing masters had to give way to their French counterparts.

Des exemples de "rapière"

Le XVIIe siècle vit l’arrivée d’une nouvelle arme d’estoc, plus légère et plus courte que la rapière, à lame de section quadrangulaire et se terminant par un bouton : le fleuret. On pouvait maintenant faire de l’escrime sans avoir l’intention de se battre. Le jeu consistait à effleurer la poitrine adverse. Elégance et courtoisie étaient les qualités requises hormis dans les duels à l’épée qui continuèrent jusqu’au milieu du XIXe siècle pour laisser place peu à peu au pistolet avant de disparaître car devenus illégaux. C’est au XVIIe siècle que se déroule le grand roman d’Alexandre Dumas, les Trois Mousquetaires, où les scènes de combat en escrime sont nombreuses.

Le mousquetaire

Membre de la compagnie des mousquetaires du roi (créée en 1622 par Louis XIII) – d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos et Aramis sont des soldats professionnels. Habitués aux duels, les mousquetaires sont rompus à diverses formes de combat mortel. Rappelons tout de même que, comme son nom l'indique, son arme principale reste le mousquet (une arme à feu portative en usage dans l'infanterie aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, avant l'apparition du fusil).
Le mousquetaire participe à des campagnes militaires. De plus, il provient d'un milieu social (la noblesse gasconne) où le maniement des armes et la pratique des duels est hautement valorisée. Bref, ce n'est pas un athlète de vocation, c'est un soldat, voire un guerrier et un tueur. Et surtout, notre mousquetaire est très familier de ce type d'arme. Largement plus lourde et longue que les armes de l'escrime sportive actuelle, la rapière était surtout conçue pour tuer, que ce soit à la ville ou sur le champ de bataille.

FR : Au XIXe siècle l’escrime était considérée comme un art d’agrément au même titre que l’équitation, la musique et la danse. La compétition sportive fut introduite avec des assauts entre les salles d’escrime. Dès les premiers Jeux Olympiques de l’ère moderne, à Athènes en 1896, l’escrime fut représentée par quatre pays. Au XXe siècle, l’escrime se démocratise.
En 1906, Bruneau de Laborie fonde la Fédération française d’escrime. Jusqu’aux années cinquante, la France, l’Italie et la Hongrie se partagèrent les médailles olympiques.
Depuis, l’escrime s’est mondialisée. La Fédération Internationale d’Escrime (FIE), créée en 1913, regroupe aujourd’hui 148 nations. Des pays comme la Russie, l’Allemagne et la Pologne sont entrés dans la cour des grands. La tactique des escrimeurs s’est modifiée: il ne s’agit plus de toucher sans être touché, mais de toucher le premier. Les coups étant portés à une vitesse fulgurante, les juges étaient incapables de prendre des décisions équitables. L’épée s’électrifia en 1936, le fleuret en 1955 et le sabre en 1989.

Pour sa part, l’escrime française a su suivre l’évolution sportive moderne tout en conservant son esprit traditionnel. Elle a un grand rayonnement mondial : on pensera aux 124 médailles olympiques depuis 1896* (les 5 dernières ont été gagnées à « Tokyo 2021) mais également au fait que la langue officielle de l’escrime au niveau mondial est la langue française.

Après avoir dit: « En garde, êtes-vous prêts? », l’arbitre lance le célèbre « Allez! ».

EN : In the 19th century, fencing was considered a recreational art, along with horse riding, music, and dance. Competitive sports were introduced with bouts between fencing halls. Fencing made its debut in the early modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, represented by four countries. In the 20th century, fencing became more accessible. In 1906, Bruneau de Laborie founded the French Fencing Federation. Until the 1950s, France, Italy, and Hungary dominated the Olympic medals. Since then, fencing has become a global sport. The International Fencing Federation (FIE), established in 1913, now comprises 148 nations. Countries like Russia, Germany, and Poland have risen to prominence. Fencers' tactics have changed: it's no longer about avoiding being hit but about striking first. With lightning-fast attacks, judges struggled to make fair decisions. The foil was electrified in 1936, the epee in 1955, and the saber in 1989. French fencing has adapted to modern sports while preserving its traditional spirit. It has a strong global presence, with 124 Olympic medals since 1896* (including the 5 recent ones at "Tokyo 2021"), and French is the official language of fencing worldwide. After saying, "En garde, êtes-vous prêts?" (On guard, are you ready?), the referee signals with the famous "Allez!" (Go!).

Le film réalisé par Vincent Pérez et présenté en exclusivité à HongKong durant le HKFFF 2023 (en anglais, The Edge of the Blade) met à l'honneur un maitre d'arme, emporté dans la spirale de la violence des duels.
