Le groupe français est de retour à Hong Kong pour la nouvelle édition du festival Clockenflap du 3 au 5 mars 2023. Le
chanteur, Thomas Mars, a accepté de répondre aux questions de l'Alliance française avant son arrivée à Hong Kong.
La longévité du groupe d'origine versaillaise est toute aussi célèbre que la qualité de leur prestation scénique qu’ils prouveront
encore sur la grande scène du festival, vendredi 3 mars 2023, pour défendre, entre autres classiques des précédents albums, leur tout
dernier ouvrage, enregistré dans des conditions très particulières.
AFHK : A partir de cette semaine, l'Asie, et ensuite, l'Amérique, comment vivez-vous la future tournée qui
s'annonce ? C’est votre deuxième venue à Hong Kong après quasiment 10 ans, gardez-vous des souvenirs de votre premier passage
à l’Asia World Expo ?
Thomas Mars : Nous avons hâte de débuter la prochaine tournée en Asie. Heureux que ce soit à Hong Kong ! Cette fois-ci nous
aurons plus de temps. La dernière visite était trop courte, mais nous gardons de très bons souvenirs de la ville et du concert.
Depuis 2019, nous étions presque 3 ans en studio pour enregistrer notre dernier album Alpha Zulu. C’est long. Nous aimerions
tourner ce disque donc nous acceptons quasiment toutes les invitations!

A propos de votre dernier album Alpha Zulu, quelle expérience gardez-vous de son enregistrement au Musée des Arts
décoratifs du Louvre ?
Ce fut une expérience unique. Se retrouver dans ce musée est une chose rare et nous étions de plus, en période de pandémie. Nous
avions le musée pour nous seuls en rajoutant les gardes de nuits et quelques fantômes...
Pourquoi ne pas avoir enregistré le titre Winter solstice au même endroit ?
Ce n’est pas une décision mais juste un concours de circonstances. Mes camarades m’ont envoyé l'instrumental de ce morceau alors
que nous étions tous confinés mais loin les uns des autres. J’étais en Californie du Nord, Christian et Deck à Paris et Branco à Rome.
La musique donnait un côté romantique à nos correspondances.
Quel a été le rôle de Thomas Bangalter, membre de Daft Punk, dans la conception de l’album ? Comment s’est passée la
production sans les conseils de votre producteur habituel, Philippe Zdar, disparu en 2019 ?
Thomas a joué un rôle minimal factuellement mais maximal émotionnellement. Philippe n’était plus avec nous. Thomas est venu nous
apporter son soutien et partager son savoir.
Note : Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (les deux membres de Daft Punk) et Laurent Brancowitz,
guitariste de Phoenix, ont joué dans un premier groupe, nommé Darlin, quand ils finissaient leurs études
secondaires dans un lycée parisien du XVIIe arrondissement.
Comment s’est passée votre première collaboration extérieure avec le musicien Ezra Koenig sur le titre Tonight ?
Je voulais entendre une autre voix que la mienne sur Tonight. Ezra est un ami et on a tout de suite pensé à lui. Oui sans doute,
nous allons nous ouvrir pour d’autres collaborations.
Que gardez-vous de votre identité versaillaise ?
On se sentait facilement anticonformistes durant nos années adolescentes passées à Versailles. Beaucoup de réflexes acquis pendant ces
années sont toujours présents. Dans notre parcours depuis le début, on privilégie toujours une approche semi-amateur d’autodidacte.
Avez-vous déjà d’autres projets musicaux en tête ?
Nous travaillons en ce moment sur une prochaine tournée que nous allons faire avec plusieurs groupes que l’on aime dont Beck,
Japanese Breakfast et Weyes Blood entre autres. On réalise également la bande originale du prochain film
de Sofia Coppola "Priscilla" sur la vie de Priscilla Presley.
