AFHK and Tramplus Unveil Winning Tram Design

Découverte de la Beauté Française

The Alliance Française de Hong Kong (AFHK) and Tramplus, a sister company of Hong Kong Tramways, unveiled the winning tram design from the inaugural Tram Design Competition last Wednesday at the Whitty Street Tram Depot. The event celebrated French creativity and cultural exchange, transforming one of Hong Kong’s most iconic transport modes into a moving canvas of French-inspired imagination.

The competition, themed “Découverte de la Beauté Française” (Discovering French Beauty), invited secondary school students to explore French aesthetics through art and design. The winning design, created by Li Pui Hiu (Elly) from St. Mark’s School, was revealed in a festive ceremony attended by Ms. Christile Drulhe, Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, alongside representatives from AFHK, Tramplus, and St. Mark’s School. “I would also like to commend the incredibly positive spirit behind this project. With its strong educational component aimed at secondary schools, it has allowed pupils to develop their curiosity about French culture, language, fashion, art and innovation, and I am delighted to see that.” said Ms. Christile Drulhe, Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macao.

Empowers Young Talent

Mr. Jean-Sébastien Attié, Executive Director of AFHK also shared his enthusiasm towards the project in his welcome speech: “We received nearly fifty student submissions—each a unique reflection of French culture through Hong Kong’s youth. These students are now cultural ambassadors.”

The tram will circulate across Hong Kong Island throughout September showcasing Elly’s winning design and inviting the public to experience French beauty in motion. Paul Tirvaudey, Managing Director of Hong Kong Tramways also added that, “This initiative celebrates diversity and empowers young talent. Trams aren’t just transport—they’re storytellers, and now, vehicles for cultural discovery.”
