An Organic Story: The Wines of the Rhone Valley and Provence

Speaker: Eric Sautede
WSET Advanced Certificate L3

Organic wines inexorably continued to gain ground in 2020, as vineyards either in organic viticulture or in the midst of being converted now represent 17.3% of all vineyards in France, with 9,784 properties over 137,000 hectares (+22% compared to 2019). Among the French “départements” with the most vineyards in organic wine-growing, the South-East region of France dominates, especially in Gard, Hérault, Vaucluse, Aude, Var, Pyrénées-Orientales, Drôme and Bouches-du-Rhône. This workshop will aim at understanding better how organic, biodynamic or simply “natural” wines are made more specifically in the Rhone and Provence wine regions and why “organic” wine-growing and wine-making have become part of their identity.

Most importantly, we will explore and taste five wines made from Viognier, Clairette, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Syrah, all typical grape varieties from these regions with their unique flavours and characteristics. Ultimately, one soon realises that going healthier and being more environment-conscious can definitely be on the side of pleasure and authenticity… so much so that a majority of French people are now saying that “organic wines are better than conventional wines, and biodynamic wines are even better than organic wines!”

Wines are provided by La Cabane.
