The French-speaking world is the only one of three major historical centres to have taken an early interest in foreign creations, in importing them and translating them. It was thus, with the passage of time, that France managed to crystallise the richest of reading proposals, and establish its market as one of the most exciting, formal creative laboratories.
The Angoulême International Comics Festival plays the role of an accelerator, and a platform for the meeting of genres and cultures, as seen from its welcome of three renowned Hong Kong comics artists — Mr. Chi-tak Li, Mr. Kwong-shing Lau and Ms. Yanai — this year.

Having participated in the Angoulême International Comics Festival several times before, in 2016, Hong Kong comic strips arrived at the forefront of the Festival with a monographic exhibition devoted to one of Hong Kong’s most talented artists, the prolific Chi-tak Li. As early as the 1980s, Li, whose graphic virtuosity was quickly discovered by local readers, multiplied his publications over the years, either in the form of albums or comic book periodicals - including those in Japan where he collaborated with the manga magazines such as
Young and Ikki among many others. His interests and work also extend to illustrations, as evident from his numerous publications in newspapers and magazines in Hong Kong. Today, with several dozen titles published, Li enjoys the rightful title of godfather of Hong Kong's independent comics.

This conference, consisting of a dialogue with two young comics artists, Kwong-shing Lau and Yanai, together with the participation of the Head of Rights and Licensing Market of the Angoulême International Comics Festival, Marie Fabbri, and the acclaimed artist Chi-tak Li highlight the benefits that the International Comics Festival of Angoulême has provided their participating artists with, in terms of creation and opportunities.
