Born in 1900, Saint-Exupéry developed a love for aviation at a young age and went on to become a pioneering aviator, flying for the French Air Force during World War I, and later working as a commercial pilot. The Little Prince, published in 1943, tells the story of a young prince who travels to different planets searching for meaning and connection. The book is often interpreted as a reflection of Saint-Exupéry's own experiences as a pilot and his deep sense of longing for human connection. Despite his death in 1944, Saint-Exupéry's legacy lives on through his writing, particularly The Little Prince, which has become a forever classic.]]></product_content>

We are happy to have invited Guylaine Maroist for an online Q&A after the screening.Original title: Je vous salue salope : La Misogynie au temps du numériqueEnglish title: Backlash, Misogyny in the Digital AgeDirector: Léa Clermont-Dion, Guylaine MaroistProduction year: 2022Genre: DocumentaryDuration: 78 minsSynopsis: This bleak opus, reminiscent of a psychological thriller, follows four women across two continents: former President of the Italian parliament Laura Boldrini, former Democratic representative Kiah Morris, French actor and YouTuber Marion Séclin, and Donna Zuckerberg, a specialist in online violence against women and the sister of Facebook’s founder. This tour de force reveals the devastating effects such unapologetic hatred has on victims, and brings to light the singular objective of cyber-misogyny: to silence women who shine. Some targets of cyber-violence will crumble under the crystallizing force of the click. Others, proud warriors, will stand tall and refuse to be silenced. Trailer: Guylaine Maroist:After studying Law, Cinema and Musicology at the University of Montreal, she became a freelance journalist at Devoir in the early 90s. At the same time, she was a guitarist in the group Jaguars. From 1996, she produced around a hundred compilations of records from the Quebec catalog for Les Disques Mérite and the Multinationale BMG. She then meets almost all the artists still alive, known and less known, of the 50s-60s-70s. She then founded her own company to produce auteur documentaries with producer and director Eric Ruel. Guylaine Maroist has held the presidency of Productions de la Ruelle since 2002. Under her reign, she transformed the documentary production company into a veritable incubator for content creation. Les Productions de la Ruelle works in particular in television, cinema, on the web and in the field of education.Léa Clermont-Dion:She was born on April 5, 1991 in Quebec. <product_content><![CDATA[AF Library, Jordan CentreSaturday, 25 February, 2023Screening : 4 pm / Talk : 5:45 pm Talk in English / Film in French with English subtitlesFor adults only$50 (Free for AF members)## When Literature Meets Film : Screening & Talk The event will be the third chapter of the EU Book Club, a collaboration between Italy, Germany and France, combining literature and film. After the first two talks and screenings organised by our Italian and German counterpart - "Clash of Civilizations over an Elevator in Piazza Vitorio" by Amara Lakhous and "[The Collini Case](https://www.goethe.de/ins/hon/en/ver.cfm?event_id=24243779)" by Ferdinand von Schirach respectively, AFHK is happy to present "Happening (L'Evénement)" by the lastest laureat of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Annie Ernaux. "Happening" is one of the writer's masterpieces. In a first-person narrative she revisits her struggle as a young woman 40 years ago to resolve her predicament: pregnancy and abortion. It was adapted into a film by French director Audrey Diwan, which went on to win the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. Two guest speakers, Uncle Salt, from Corrupt the Youth, and Dr Sabrina Yeung (Assistant Professor, Department of Chinese, HSUHK) will discuss with the audience various issues, literary and social, raised in the original novel and also the film adaptation, after the film screening. Author & Book : Happening by Annie ErnauxAnnie Ernaux is born in 1940 in Normandy. The French writer is known for her uncompromising and clinically clean writings, always attempting to widen the boundaries of literature beyond fiction in the narrow sense. Her works shift between memoir and fiction, the personal and the collective, and her ambition goes beyond fiction-writing to dissect and confront the sociological and historical forces working in the society at a particular time. She is the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022 She is ruthless in "Happening" where she revisits, 40 years later, the agonizing experience of being pregnant and unattached at the age of 23. Sifting through her memories and journal entries dating from those days, she tries to glean meanings in that experience. We have a few of the books in original French version for sale. <product_content><![CDATA[AF Library, Jordan CenterWednesday, 18 January, 20237 - 9:30 pmIn English with English SubtitlesFor all ages $50 ; Free for AF members On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the death of cinema's first master magician Georges Méliès on 21 January 1938, Alliance Française de Hong Kong organizes a program across different media to honor the great figure : a VR experience specially designed and developed by Ubisoft for the Méliès Museum, entitled Georges Méliès: Virtual Fantasy (Fantaisies virtuelles) and a screening of the maestro filmaker Martin Scorsese' film Hugo (Hugo Cabret) - his personal love letter to early cinema and the pioneers in the medium including Méliès. Original title: HugoFrench title: Hugo CabretDirector: Martin ScorseseProduction year: 2011Genre: Adventure / drama / mystery Duration: 126 minsSynopsis: Orphaned and left with a mysterious machine by his clockmaker father, Hugo Cabret attempted to fix the complicated mechanics on his own by stealing parts from toy store in the Montparnasse station, owned by Georges Méliès and encountered his goddaughter Isabell along the way. Together they departed on a spectacular journey that uncovered Georges' former identity as the wonderful stage magician in his own film company and his relationship with the secrets left behind by Hugo's father. Winner of 5 Academy Awards (including Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects), this movie presents the magic of humanity and purpose finding while paying a vibrant tribute to the legendary French illusionist and pioneer of cinema Georges Méliès (1861-1938), played by renowed British actor Sir Ben Kingsley. Trailer: French pioneer of early cinema: Georges MélièsA director, inventor, magician, and also painter, he was a major figure of early cinema, shortly after the invention of the "Cinématographe" by the French Lumière brothers in 1895. Starting from 1896, he was active as a filmmaker for 17 years, and worked in a studio located in Montreuil-sous-Bois in Paris. He directed around 600 movies, ranging from one to forty minute-long. He mainly focused on three genres: fairy tale and fantasy, science-fiction (sometimes based on Jules Verne's novels), and historical reconstitution. He is most famous for his Trip to the Moon ("Le Voyage dans la Lune", 1902). But many others are sadly considered lost nowadays. Méliès was a skilled handyman, never out of ideas for new technical experiments. He arguably used the first story-boards, pyrotechnical and optical effects, crossfading, animated models, overprinting, editing effects, colour effects on film, to name but a few. He handled almost every aspect and step in the movie making process: script, set, costumes; he played in, produced and distributed his own movies. Film makers such as Walt Disney, George Lucas, or Terry Gilliam all acknowledged Méliès' legacy and influence on their own work. Having collected a tremendous amount of archives and objects in relation to Méliès' work, the French Cinémathèque recently opened Musée Méliès. Within 800 m2, it is a trip throughout the history of cinema, featuring over 300 machines, costumes, posters, drawings, and models. This event is possible thanks tohttp://www.grec-info.com/index.php]]></product_content>

Trailer in French: Trailer in English:Joann SfarBorn in 1971 in Nice, Joann Sfar is a prolific comic book artist, writer, and director, whose most famous works include Le Chat du Rabbin (The Rabbi's Cat), Donjon, Klezmer, and Petit Vampire (all available at the Jordan library!), to name but a few. Alongside other artists who started their career in the 1990s, such as Lewis Trondheim, Manu Larcenet or Marjane Satrapi, Joann Sfar contributed in radically changing the landscape of French-language comic books, dealing with more mature themes, and exploring the genre of autobiography. After the critical and commercial success of many of his books, Joann Sfar started directing movies with Gainsbourg, vie heroique (Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life), Le Chat du Rabbin (adapted from his own comic book), and La Dame dans l'auto avec des lunettes et un fusil (The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun). Also adapted from his own comic series, Petit Vampire is Joann Sfar's fourth feature film. *Participants must follow the anti-pandemic measures and arrangements by the Organiser. Pierrot le fou : 7 October, Thurs 7pm Director: Jean-Luc GodardDuration: 1h45 Dissatisfied in marriage and life, Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) takes to the road with the babysitter, his ex-lover Marianne Renoir (Anna Karina), and leaves the bourgeois world behind. Yet this is no normal road trip: the tenth feature in six years by genius auteur Jean-Luc Godard is a stylish mash-up of anticonsumerist satire, au courant politics, and comic-book aesthetics, as well as a violent, zigzag tale of, as Godard called them, “the last romantic couple.” With blissful color imagery by cinematographer Raoul Coutard and Belmondo and Karina at their most animated, Pierrot le fou is one of the high points of the French New Wave, and was Godard’s last frolic before he moved ever further into radical cinema.Trailor : Pricing policy updates : To enjoy free discount, interested AF members should log in and register individually.
