On April 15, 2019, the world witnessed as Notre-Dame Cathedral was nearly destroyed in a devastating fire. While the cathedral is currently
closed for restoration, it is still possible to visit it thanks to Ubisoft’s VR experience.
Ubisoft has been collaborating with historians for years, meticulously collecting data and testimonials to build Notre-Dame in-game. Based
on this 3D model, Ubisoft created a VR tour of Notre-Dame, enriched by the addition of lighting, sound - especailly
the real sound of the great organ playing Johann Sebastian Bach -, special effects and animated characters. People can now get back to
the cathedral and discover point-of-views that were inaccessible to the public, and elements of architecture that were destroyed by the
fire, including the famous spire!
In a 3x3 meters zone, the visitor is invited to look around and take a few steps to admire each perspective of the monument, to the sound of its famous Cavaillé-Coll Organ performing J.S. Bach in 4 minutes.
This experience has been shown for the first time at the UNESCO Headquarters on Heritage Days 2019 and was part of the South by Southwest Virtual Cinema 2020 selection.
NOTRE-DAME ON FIRE offers a blow-by-blow recreation of the gripping events that took place on April 15, 2019, when the cathedral suffered the biggest blaze in its history. The film tells the story behind the story while retracing how heroic men and women put their lives on the line to accomplish the awe-inspiring rescue of a central monument of the French national heritage.
